The Lord's Prayer

This prayer is quoted in two of the Gospels. In Matthew chapter 6, and in Luke chapter 11. Jesus quoted 'his' prayer in response to the disciples' request, 'Lord, teach us to pray'.

In St. Luke's  account Jesus says, "Your Father knows what you need before you ask him, so you should pray like this..."

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

In some Christian traditions a doxology is frequently added to the prayer, and it is also included in the Catholic liturgy of the Eucharist as a separate response:

For the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory
are Yours, now and for ever, Amen.
